Receiving the news that you have dementia is a big deal. Not only does it mean that you can now make sense of the array of symptoms you’ve been experiencing over the previous months and possibly years, but you’re also faced with the knowledge that you have a completely life-changing illness. Coupled with that knowledge is the awareness that everyone around you will be affected. Life will never be the same again for any of you.

From the carer’s perspective, at the time of diagnosis the person with dementia may well be only mildly affected. She may still be working, have an active social life and be playing a full part in her family and community. At this stage, when things haven’t progressed too far, she should be actively involved in making important decisions regarding jobs, finances and the legacy she’ll leave behind.
