Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) uses sites to define boundaries between different business locations and different subnets. A site can include multiple subnets, but all subnets within a site should be connected by reliably available network connections. The connection between sites, however, can be over a slow or less reliable network connection. Active Directory replication uses two models—intrasite replication within a single site, and intersite replication between sites.
