Summary

14.1 Introduction

As discussed in Chapter 1, many of the traditional services carried on telco networks have evolved to an IP converged protocol for transport. These include voice, private data for enterprises and mobile signaling, voice, and data. This convergence at the network protocol layer has driven providers to embrace convergence of the network infrastructure itself. As discussed, the benefits are enormous, allowing streamlining of CapEx and OpEx.

This convergence capability brings significant opportunities and associated challenges. The opportunity for consolidation of equipment and operational teams far outweighs the technical challenges of scaling, security, and efficient use of equipment and expensive bandwidth. The ...
