Although the UKCP09 climate projections show little change in total annual rainfall, the distribution throughout the year is likely to alter, with more falling in winter and less in summer, as shown on the maps produced by UKCIP for the original Design for Future Climate report and available online, a sample of which is shown in Appendix 3. Accompanied by the increasing intensity and frequency of extreme events, this seasonal shift could lead to more flooding and greater water scarcity. Both are already well accounted for in the current planning and regulatory system, but the effect of future changes in the climate has not yet been fully factored in.
