IN EARLY 1993, I SPENT the first of many pleasant nights at Marigold Lodge on the north shore of Lake Macatawa, in Holland, Michigan. Macatawa isn’t really a lake but a large inlet with a narrow mouth, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, about forty-five minutes southwest of Grand Rapids. The inn was at the end of a discreet lane off a long, winding, backwoods road, located on a little peninsula that juts out into the lake.
