A Area Moment of Inertia

A.1 Introduction

The area moment of inertia (second moment of inertia) quantifies the resistance of a shape against bending and deflection. It is not to be confused with the moment of inertia, which quantifies the rotational inertia of a rigid body.

Closed‐form expressions for the area moment of inertia exist for simple geometries only. In many instances, we have to rely on numerical methods to calculate the area moment of inertia. In this appendix, we review the principal equations that define the area moment of inertia.

A.2 Terminology

We define the moment of inertia upper I Subscript o o of a solid body with volume upper V and mass m that rotates about an axis o as

(A.1)upper I Subscript o o Baseline equals integral Underscript upper V Endscripts r squared d m comma

where r is the orthogonal distance between the center of gravity of the solid body and the rotation axis o. The moment ...
