In plate girder bridges, the main load carrying members are plate girders whereas in truss girder bridges, they are the vertical truss girders. In suspension bridges and cable stayed bridges, the main load carrying elements are cables. These bridges may be used for railway lines as well as highways. In this chapter, only plate girder bridges constructed for railway lines are considered.
