Design Optimization

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss design optimization—one of the mainstream methods in support of engineering design. In design optimization, we minimize (or maximize) an objective function that is subject to performance constraints by varying a set of design variables, such as part dimensions, material properties, and so on. Usually, we deal with one objective function, carrying out the so-called single-objective optimization problem, which is the subject we discuss in this chapter. Sometimes, more than one objective function needs to be minimized simultaneously.
