The membership life cycle model

The second model of membership types you can use to consider your members’ influence needs is Kim's membership life cycle model. Amy Jo Kim is a visionary social architect whose company, Shufflebrain, has been breaking new ground using smart games to create social architectures for clients such as eBay, Yahoo!, and Electronic Arts. In her classic book, Community Building on the Web, Kim uses a life cycle metaphor to generate her classification of membership types. Kim describes five “successive stages of community involvement” and illustrates how each stage correlates with a different membership type.
