Simple, beautiful, and
effective. The full-bleed
text helps change the pace of
the book while retaining its
minimal approach.
Moxie Films (U.S.) had produced a successful
documentary called
Uneven Fairways
, celebrating
the African Americans who fought prejudice and
segregation for the right to play golf at the
highest level. The director wanted to follow this
with a book featuring portraits of these legendary
golfers by Nike photographer, Michael Faye. Blok
developed the title,
PAR
, for its two meanings: the
strokes a golfer needs to complete a hole and the
struggle to be “on par,” or equal. The design is
bold, befitting the players, and showcases the
intimacy of the portraits.

A closer look
Three letters, one image.
That’s a powerful cover.
Blok shows immense
confidence cropping the
image so drastically and
giving the cover so much
breathing space.
Leaving out the counters in the letters not only makes
die-cutting a lot simpler, but adds a contemporary
edge to the book. It’s simple, but effective.
