Critical literacy education focuses on investigations into language and power. Threaded through our course—in the readings, the feedback that we gave to students, the assignments, and the teaching—was attention to language. What we said about our students' learning has a great deal to do with the conditions that we set up for them as learners (Cambourne, 1995). Like other teacher educators we work very hard to support our students as they change the frames—and subsequent language practices—to describe their students.
