Most people rely strictly on that simple and recognizable input field located on most sites, accompanied by a Search button. And when they truly need more control over their searches, there is often an Advanced Search option of some kind to turn to.
But how advanced does it need to get? More specifically, how complicated do the Advanced options need to be for a user to find what she needs?
