These years closing one millennium and opening the next are an incredibly exciting time for those of us fortunate enough to work with communications technology. Regulatory barriers are falling. The industry is coalescing and rationalizing. Technology is rampant. No longer just a playground for nerds, the Internet has become an essential part of the daily activities of many Americans and is playing an increasingly visible, vital global role. Traditional boundaries between voice and data communications are breaking down. Widespread deployment of fiber optics is demonstrating the potential to drive the cost of telecommunications downward dramatically. And wireless technologies are proliferating.
