The latest innovations in web technologies—largely enabled by advanced CSS, client-side JavaScript and Ajax, and browser plug-ins like Flash—bring visual appeal and rich interaction capabilities to modern websites. But they come with a big limitation: browsers and devices have varying levels of support for these technologies. Though modern browsers and the latest mobile devices are capable of rendering very complex interfaces, they account for only a portion of the device universe. And as we discussed in the introduction, creating a site or application that works only on a limited set of high-end browsers and devices can seriously limit your ability to reach to the widest possible audience.
