3 Recording, replay and editing principles
This chapter is concerned with the principles of audio recording and replay using mass storage media, including various approaches to editing.
3.1 The sound file
In audio workstations, recordings are stored in sound files on mass storage media. The storage medium is normally a disk but other media may be used in certain circumstances such as for backup of disks. For the sake of simplicity disks are assumed to be the primary means of storage in the following sections.
