Business integration involves integrating other external, third-party, or legacy applications. After all, this is the promise of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Enterprise application integration (EAI) was supposed to achieve this goal, and to some extent it did through creating and using proprietary resource adapter interfaces. However, it required a resource adapter to be developed for each EAI vendor and Enterprise Information System (EIS) combination. Therein lay the need for a common connector architecture, and hence the emergence of JCA[1] or J2EE Connector Architecture.
