This chapter gives a history behind the open-source initiative and describes the general licensing arrangement associated with open-source software. It describes the various attributes of the GPL (General Public License), as well as the various types of open source licenses that are in use. It describes considerations of the DMCA are described as well as public domain and shareware licensing concerns and litigation that can possibly ensue.
