Keys to Improved Listening

Leaders and leaders-in-training can undertake personal practice in better listening by committing to four keys for improvement.

  1. Create a “meaning road map” as you listen. Where is the speaker coming from? Where is she headed in the conversation? What unexpected detours take place and why? What potholes does the speaker seem to experience on the road? By tracking a conversation this way, a leader can condense a flood of words into a clear, understandable message. By mentally accompanying the speaker on this journey of words, the leader can aid conversation by helping the speaker over the rough spots and by pointing out shortcuts that the speaker may not have seen.
