Mineralisation of carbon dioxide (CO2)
R. Zevenhoven and J. Fagerlund, Åbo Akademi University, Finland
Abstract:
Mineralisation of carbon dioxide (CO2), or mineral carbonation, involves the reaction of CO2 with materials containing alkaline-earth oxides like magnesium oxide (MgO) and calcium oxide (CaO). For large-scale CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) purposes this makes use of the vast resources of magnesium silicate minerals that are available worldwide, resulting in an environmentally benign magnesium carbonate product that needs no post- storage monitoring. As a spin-off technology related to this, the production of valuable calcium carbonates from industrial by-products and wastes quickly develops into profitable technology. ...
