By the end of the 70s, DHL had arrived, albeit still fragile, in the face of a business model so novel and so disruptive that the forces of reaction and regulatory obstinacy were assembling on many fronts. The spirit of the pioneer, that unique blend of attitudes and cultures which derived from the founders, the willingness to confront the odds, manage “by the seat of one’s pants” and just work fearlessly hard, had gotten DHL this far. There were many heroics and subtle innovations, and there were a few things which went wrong, or didn’t succeed, or were premature.
