image I have always been intrigued by those old World War II aviation oil paintings that one occasionally comes across in history books. The mood and atmosphere are often almost tangible, together with those wintry skies and muted palettes – so evocative of that darkest hour in human history. My aim was to capture the feeling of those old paintings while depicting the very intense fighting over the Crimean peninsula in 1944 as the Axis forces started making their withdrawal from the Caucasus.
