Speech forensics

Introduction

Although considered outside the scope of this book due to the prerequisite of expertise in other fields, for the sake of completeness, this chapter provides an overview of speech forensics. The reader interested in learning more is encouraged to seek out specific content relating to this area, as its reach extends far beyond digital audio forensics and into statistics, digital signal processing, and phonetics.

Although the terms ‘speaker identification’ and ‘speaker recognition’ appear to be used interchangeably by media outlets and the public at large, they are, in fact, two distinctly different areas. The term ‘speaker comparison’ encompasses both, as each relates to the comparison of voices.
