As we have seen, the normal domestic television, around most of the world, uses a little more than 500 or 600 lines to make up the vertical definition of the picture and is designed to give an equivalent definition horizontally. Providing the audience is not so close to the screen, or the screen so large so that the lines become apparent, this is very satisfactory.
The current cathode ray tubes with their shadow mask technology can do little to improve the apparent definition on the image-forming portion of their screen.
