ince the earliest beginnings of art, the portrait has been one of its most popular forms. The oldest surviving examples, dating from early Egyptian, through Greek and Roman times and into the first millennium, often feature deities or idealised heroic subjects. Although the ravages of time and climate have left their mark, the examples which survive bear testimony to the skills of the earliest portrait painters.
