Short digital communications links have different hardware requirements and rules (protocols) than long data links do for a number of reasons. As distances increase, frequency-dependent losses in the transmission media attenuate and delay the spectral components transmitted by the data source. Interfering radiation from man-made or natural sources will also have more opportunities to couple into data communications links as the length of the interconnection increases.
