Chapter 4. Bit Error Ratio Testing

In a digital transmission system, many things can go wrong. The transmitter may send incorrect data; the signal may be altered along the transmission path; and the receiver may make incorrect bit decisions. The bit error ratio is the fundamental measure of the overall transmission quality of a system: a single number, based on a conceptually simple test in which we count how many bits the system got right and how many errors it made.
