High-speed serial communication (~10 Gbit/s) has historically been associated with fiber-optic communications links. The reason is clear: Relative to electrical printed circuit boards (PCBs) and cables, fiber optics offer high bandwidth at an affordable price, and fiber can achieve transmission distances that are difficult in electrical links.
