I’ve already made the case that ensuring online safety is not the same as teaching digital citizenship, even though they frequently get confused. And while the concepts aren’t interchangeable, the principles of online safety and privacy remain critical competencies of alert digital citizens. I prefer using the term “alert” when talking about online safety because it reminds us that staying safe online requires action and awareness; we keep our kids safe by teaching them to remain alert. Digital citizens not only keep themselves safe online but are also mindful of creating a safe space for others online as well.
