6.1 Data is Volatile

Imagine you are carrying a reel of film to a vault when all of a sudden, it spontaneously combusts, bursting into flames and leaves behind a pile of ash. Imagine you are watching a video, and some of the frames suddenly are missing or duplicated or completely randomized.

Although these events sound far-fetched, the equivalent situations can (and do) happen frequently in the digital realm. Data gets moved and reorganized far more than video footage or reels of film. Data is easily duplicated and just as easily deleted, permanently lost at the click of a button. Even limited experience with computers can show how easy it is for things to go wrong.
