Purpose: To Discover the Effect of Light on a Subject.
When you have worked with light for a while you will be able to anticipate the effect it will have on a subject before placing the first light. You will also find that knowledge gained in the studio will transfer to the field, even when you don't have any artificial light in your bag. Without thinking, you will move a lamp; have your subject move closer to a wall; look out a window; move back a few feet so the fluorescent lights aren't casting shadows in their eye sockets; turn so an open door creates a rim or back light.
