Up to now we have assumed that the source center emission wavelength was unaffected by the modulation. In fact, when a short current pulse is applied to a semiconductor laser, its center emission wavelength may hop from one mode to a longer neighboring wavelength. In the case where a multi-longitudinal mode laser is used, this hopping effect is negligible; however, it is very significant for a single longitudinal laser.
