Photographers have their comfort zones and discomfort zones. There are certain subjects you enjoy photographing the most, and others that you don’t like — or are reluctant to tackle because they seem difficult or overly challenging. In my case, I started my career as a sports photographer who also shot rock concerts for a daily newspaper, and I grew to love travel photography (and travel!). All three types remain among my very favorite subjects.
But I find that venturing into my discomfort zone — types of photography that I find especially challenging, such as nature and landscape shooting — tend to spark creativity and get me thinking about photography in new ways.
