Introduction
REVELATION is too strong a word for what happened, but it is fair to say that this book began with a mini insight. In 1996 I was doing a casual editing shift on a regional daily newspaper. Having been away from Australia for more than a decade, I was keen to re-acquaint myself with how Australian newspapers worked. Perhaps it was the instant coffee, or maybe I was just feeling relaxed after the meal break, but in one of the few quiet moments that evening my mind slipped back to when I first encountered the world of the sub-editor.
