Appendix E: the IEEE1394 high speed serial AV interconnection bus

Interconnection of new digital audiovisual consumer equipment such as an IRD, a VCR, a camcorder and a multimedia computer will soon require a high speed link between the different pieces of equipment. As the equipment will be operating in a consumer environment, it has to be designed to be low cost and as easy to use as possible (‘plug and play’ with ‘hot plugging’ capability).

The recently standardized IEEE1394 (1995) high speed serial bus fulfils these requirements.
