Abstract
The emerging, high-level focus on utilizing simulation through means of digital twin to assist operational choices should be welcomed by simulation and automation experts. However, it is believed that critical concerns like usability, maintainability, sustainability, effectiveness, and all other aspects should be seen and evaluated if the entire potential of digital twins is to be achieved. This chapter discusses about the technology of digital twin and explains the role of digital twin in oil and gas industry by conducting a survey of the related literature.

9.1 Introduction
One of the effectively growing technology is “digital twin.” It was even named among first ten strategic technology trends by Gartner in the year 2017. According to Gartner, the concept of digital twin is indeed not recent, as engineering simulation has been around for at least thirty years.
They credit National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) researchers with the twin notion, which dates back to the Apollo 13 mission. Gartner has also mentioned digital twin can be viewed as considered one of the milestones in the technology of simulation.
This approach is valuable, but it obscures work done in recent ...
