Digital Camera Conversion and Other Equipment Considerations

3.1 Imaging Sensors

Digital cameras contain an imaging sensor, usually either a CCD or CMOS type (though a couple of other types do exist, such as the multilayered Foveon sensor in Sigma digital cameras; see Box below). The sensor sits in the focal plane of the camera and is composed of a grid of several million light-sensitive picture elements (pixels) which convert light intensity and colour into electronic signals, which are digitised and then converted into a viewable image.
