Specialist Applications and Multispectral Imaging

7.1 Overview

UV and IR photographic techniques have been used extensively by the scientific community since their invention. This chapter will examine in more detail three specific areas where the techniques have been, and continue to be, used to visualise information about their subjects: cultural heritage, including art restoration and analysis, medicine and forensic science.

A relatively recent development in the use of the techniques is that of multispectral imaging, where the same subject may be photographed in various specific wavelengths of UV, visible and/or IR, in order to highlight specific information.
