RECOGNIZING THE

SUPERIOR SCREENPLAY

Most fiction films start with a screenplay (also called a property). It should be original, well written, and make good use of the cinema. As its director, you must be fascinated with the world it creates and with the ideas that it puts forward, because you are going to be married to it for a long, long time.

Chapter 10, “Alternative Story Sources,” shows that scripts can be generated in nontraditional ways. For the time being, however, let’s concentrate on the nor-mal source—a screenplay written by a screenwriter.
