All of the best design, narrative, art and animation visions will fall flat if the project doesn’t have the technical and engineering support required to bring it to life. When it comes to other mediums that employ animation, the problem of ‘how do we make the character move on the screen?’ is largely solved. Which allows the animation team to largely focus on ‘why is the character moving at all?’ And when they talk about a character’s performance, it is in terms of acting choices. But for games, performance can just as much mean how well the character actually functions in the game from a technical standpoint.
