CHAPTER 7 Defining the Animation Style

On top of the emotional and physical performances of a character, there is the animation style itself to be defined. Using the definition of art as ‘communicating an idea with creative intent’, the style would be the specific way in which the intent is being communicated. It is the language, inflection and pace you use to communicate your intent. In terms of animation, this translates to posing, motion and timing as the building blocks used to define a style.

How those building blocks can be used to convey a specific style can be incredibly subjective to define. For clarity of communication around style, I will be using a coordinate graph with abstract to realism on one axis ...
