Directing the Actor

Volumes have been written about acting. Mary Lou coauthored one of them with actress and author Dinah Lenney, Acting for Young Actors (Back Stage Books). Bethany and Mary Lou believe that the more you know about the actor’s process, the better director you’ll be. So where do we start when talking about directing actors? Let’s begin with the 5 Ws: who, what, where, when, and why. These are the same words a journalist explores when writing the lead to a story to ensure that all the essential information is addressed in the first paragraph of a news article.

An actor begins with those same words when finding out all the information about a character he is beginning to explore.
