Introduction to digital libraries
Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction to the development of digital libraries with a brief review of selected definitions developed in the research and practice communities. It also examines the key frameworks of digital libraries. Furthermore, this chapter traces the evolution of digital libraries beginning with a Prelude: Early Visionaries and the Pre-1990s Era, and then moving into the Formative Years: 1991–2001, Building the Content and Opening Access: 2000s, and Large-scale Digital Libraries: 2010–. This chapter also highlights the major developments and projects in the field. Finally, the benefits and challenges within each period of digital library development are discussed.
