Abstract

This chapter focuses on metadata standards and the process of building metadata in digital libraries. It begins with the definitions of metadata and an overview of different types of metadata standards used in the description and management of digital library resources. Next, it introduces the concept of schemas as a foundational metadata building block and reviews a number of schemas developed and used in libraries, archives, and museums. In addition to the theoretical aspects of metadata, this chapter examines the practice of designing and implementing metadata in digital collections with a focus on developing metadata application profiles and the use of content and value standards.
