Light has always been at the core of the actor’s environment, and developing technology enables this light to be manipulated in an increasingly creative way. Used sympathetically, light supports the actors; used crudely, it may leave them cruelly exposed. How can we develop our ability to use light as a positive aid to communication with an audience?

While the spoken and written word can convey technical and organizational information, visual ideas are difficult to express in verbal form. Consequently, practical handling of light, with observation of the relation between effect and cause, is central to any study of stage lighting.
