Response to designed light, like response to any art, involves subjective judgements in which the final arbiter can only be the reaction of an eye which feels either that the light looks right or that it does not. Lighting designers need to develop confidence in the response of their eyes but, because theatre is a group activity, they must remain sensitive to the opinions of the rest of the production team. And, no matter how sensitive a lighting designer’s eye, the opinion of other eyes can be very important because, under pressure, the lighting designer may be concentrating so much on detail as to misjudge the total effect.
