acting areas Parts of the stage setting where acting is located.

backlight Modelling light which strikes from behind to increase the illusion of depth by separating individual items of scenery from each other and separating actors from the scenic background.

bar Horizontal tube of scaffolding diameter from which scenery or lights are suspended.

barndoors Set of four rotatable shutters fixed as an accessory to the front of a Fresnel or PC focus spot to control spill and provide a rough shaping of the beam.

battens (1) Lengths of floodlighting with alternating compartments wired in groups for colour mixing. (2) Lengths of timber at the tops and bottoms of cloths, or used to join flats together for flying (French flats).
