The Slow Erosion of American Manufacturing Industries

Despite a lot of talk about reshoring jobs and growing manufacturing, all administrations back to Bill Clinton have opted for free trade and watched 38 critical manufacturing industries decline in terms of number of plants and employees. Both Democratic and Republican administrations give lip service to stopping the decline of these 38 manufacturing industries, but other than the Trump tariffs, little has been done by the government to reshore jobs and production. This was a de facto decision to sacrifice manufacturing jobs and industries in order to import cheap consumer products.
