Prologue

…broken concrete, shattered glass, twisted steel. Wisps of smoke rose slowly where fires now smoldered. Dust hung in the air and choked out most of the light. In the rubble there were glimpses of clothing, suitcases, and scattered debris… each one had been important to people now gone. A woman’s red shoe lay on its side near a fallen wall, the former owner likely entombed somewhere beneath. The words began to take on substance only after the shocked passersby had processed the image.
