Voltage Transients and Insulation Coordination in Distributed Photovoltaic Grid Power Transformers

Voltage transients are created in distributed photovoltaic grid transformers (DPV-GTs) due to changing weather conditions. The amount of irradiance that impinges on the PV panels is inversely proportional to the cloud coverage. Other situations that can affect the voltage transients are related to the kinds of load attached to such DPV grids. The existence of nonlinear loads can cause proportional transients that subject the insulation of the transformers to unusual stresses that the designer has to be cognizant of to improve the operation of such transformers.
