1. Geographic Location and Administrative Regions
China is located in eastern Asia, and covers an area of approximately 9.6 million square kilometers. China consists of two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) − Hong Kong and Macau − and 32 provinces. Five of these 32 provinces are considered minority autonomous regions and four are municipalities directly under central government control (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing). All 32 provinces are subject to the governance of the Chinese central government, while the Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR enjoy broader powers than those of the other provinces located in mainland China1.
